While exact figures are not available, Missouri State Fair officials attendance figures are trending upwards.
“We are having an awesome fair, we still have a few days to go so come on out the weather is absolutely gorgeous,” said Missouri State Fair Marketing Director Tammie Nichols. “We don’t have a lot of reports in yet, but we are trending up. Carnival revenue and other things are looking very good.”
Exact attendance figures will not be available for several days as a portion of the figure comes from ticket sales by outside retailers.
“We rely on our retail outlets and they don’t report until after the fair is over, so we are still waiting for those reports to come in,” Nichols said. “It is kind of a timely process, but it really helps us get an accurate account.”
While opening day started on a gloomy note weather wise, attendance peaked in the afternoon as the skies cleared.
“Opening day, despite the rain, ended up being a beautiful day. We did not reach the numbers we had the year before, however it was a beautiful turnout and a very successful day. I think our Friday this year was our best attended. It looks like it will be coming in higher than it was the year before,” Nichols said.
Saturday was also highly attended and with Wednesday’s concert sold out, 2014 could be a banner year. The fair has seen an increase of more than 10,000 visitors every year for the past five years. In 2013, attendance was 366,218. In 2012, it was 353,700 and in 2011, it was 343,000.
