GODFREY — Another instance of sticky-fingered shopping allegedly occurred Saturday when a loss prevention officer at the Godfrey Wal-Mart contacted the Madison County Sheriff’s Office regarding a retail theft.

According to Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz, Graham J. Ladd, 19, of Bethalto was charged Monday with two felony counts of retail theft.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to the Godfrey Wal-Mart at 4:37 p.m. and was told by the loss prevention officer that a male suspect stole four car batteries valued at $439.88 from the business.

The suspect reportedly pushed a cart containing the batteries out of the store and loaded them into a truck. The suspect then fled the area. The loss prevention officer told the deputy that the same suspect also stole four car batteries from the business on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Deputies located and stopped the suspect vehicle on Godfrey Road, near Pardee Lane, Godfrey shortly after Saturday’s complaint. Deputies recovered the four car batteries stolen in Saturday’s theft from the bed of the truck. The driver, Ladd, was identified as the suspect in both incidents, the release said.

Ladd was arrested and transported to the Madison County Jail where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. Ladd was also charged with one misdemeanor charge of Criminal Trespass to Property due to the fact he had previously been banned from Wal-Mart property for his involvement in a prior theft from the Wal-Mart in Wood River.

The warrant and criminal information was issued by the Honorable Judge Neil Schroeder, who set Ladd’s Bond at $20,000.00.
