WARRENSBURG — A Knob Noster woman has been charged with trying to lure a police officer posing as a teenage boy to have sex.

Melissa Anne Whisenhunt, 39, was scheduled to appear in Johnson County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to be arraigned on a charge of attempted statutory rape in the second degree.

A Johnson County grand jury indicted her on June 27, and she was arrested and freed on a $5,000 bond.

Whisenhunt “attempted to have sexual intercourse with Steven L. Edwards, a police officer portraying himself to be a child” younger than 17, the indictment alleges.

Edwards is a deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.

If convicted, Whisenhunt could be sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of $5,000.
