Girl has date for surgery in China
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Savannah has her date.
Eight-year-old Savannah Watring, of Syracuse, is scheduled to fly to China July 23 with her grandmother and father to receive stem cell treatments
in hopes of restoring her eyesight.
Savannah is blind and was born with optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH), which happens when a child’s optic nerve fails to develop in utero. Her family has raised money since September to pay for the trip to China, stem cell treatments and the month long stay, all of which is expected to cost about $50,000.
RaVana Watring, Savannah’s grandmother, said their flight home returns Aug. 28.
“We’re very excited,” Watring said. “I’ve waited so many months for this.”
Savannah’s pursuit of stem cell treatments has drawn the attention of Good Morning America producers. Watring said the ABC morning show plans to tape Savannah’s visit to an ophthalmologist in Joplin on Sunday and Monday.
Savannah’s family plans to document her progress in China on their Web site, www.sightforsavannah.com.
