Program helps in stocking up for school

School will be back in session in a little more than a month, and supplies could set back parents almost $100 per student.
Linda Mackesty, founder of Community and Children Teaming up 4 Success, or CACTUS, for the ninth year will try to help parents with that expense.
“There is not an income guide; all students in Pettis County are eligible, including home schools,” Mackesty said.
Last year 987 students went to school with backpacks filled with appropriate supplies for their grade because of CACTUS. This year, Mackesty hopes to increase that number.
The CACTUS group has planned two fundraisers to collect supplies and donations.
Stuff-The-Bus will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12. A school bus will be at each end of Wal-Mart for donations. Volunteers will attempt to fill the two buses with donated school supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers and other basics.
Mackesty also plans to have a Pumping-For-Proceeds. Volunteers will be at all five Casey’s stores from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19. Volunteers will pump gas and wash windows for donations.
“I appreciate all of the volunteers because if it wasn’t for them, this wouldn’t be able to happen. We have had the same kids volunteering all nine years,” Mackesty said.
Wade Norton, principal at Heber Hunt Elementary, said the program helps needy children.
“Sedalia families work very hard, but if they need help, they know where to get it,” Norton said.
Mackesty collects donations and supplies during the summer, but she makes them available throughout the school year.
Kelly McFatrich, Skyline Elementary principal, said teachers often contact Mackesty in the middle of the school year for special projects.
“At any time of the year, we can contact Linda to get our supplies,” McFatrich said. “She is very prompt.”
Any person or business may donate or call Mackesty, and she will make arrangements to pick up the donations.
“We have always have a good response. Our community is always great at not just helping us but everyone,” Mackesty said.
To donate, call Mackesty at (660) 826-4266, or donate by sending a check to: CACTUS, 1000 E. Third St., Sedalia. MO, 65301.
