Who knows what supernatural entities lurk in Sedalia, surrounding areas?
Doors opening and closing by themselves, strange voices in the night and unexplainable shadows haunt Sedalia and surrounding areas.
Some believe that ghosts are real while others carry on the story for a fun scare.
Britt Faaborg, of Sedalia, is a member of the Sedalia Ghost Hunters. He and his team of nine people have investigated businesses and homes throughout Missouri and Iowa and he definitely believes in ghosts.
“We have come across too many things that just don’t add up,” Faaborg said.
Faaborg is currently investigating a location in Arrow Rock where he has recorded unexplainable voices and noises using an electric voice phenomena.
“Doors have opened and closed twice while we were there,” Faaborg said.
One place that he would like to investigate is the Bothwell Hotel. The hotel was recently named a “Haunted Hideaway” by an AAA inspector’s poll.
The hotel’s elevator has been known to operate on its own and guests have reported items missing from their rooms.
Ashley Cooke has been the front desk assistant at the hotel for three years. She has stayed away from the basement for about a year.
Last summer, she was doing laundry in the basement of the hotel when she saw a figure. The figure ran upstairs, but was never seen again.
“It’s scary,” Cooke said.
A few months ago, a group of ghost hunters stayed at the hotel and told Cooke that they detected “possible spirits” on the upper floors. She said she has had guests report strange noises and doors opening and closing by themselves in the night. One man left in the middle of the night after claiming he saw a spirit standing at the end of his bed on the seventh floor, Cooke said.
In Knob Noster, there is not a specific haunted building, but instead a ghost who lurks through the city at night.
Doug Kermick, of Knob Noster, has lived in the city since 1982.
The traveler of Knob Noster is a ghost story about a man who lived on the knob. He was walking at night with a lantern when he was struck by lightning and killed.
“I’ve heard rumors of it,” Kermick said.
Kermick said the man was a hermit and now people claim to see a lighted figure wandering the city.
“It’s been alleged that you can still see him,” Kermick said.
Personal homes are not safe from hauntings. Tyler Tubbs, 16, of Smithton, lives with his family in a house that was once an old church.
Tyler said he and his three brothers have heard doors slamming and lights often turn themselves on and off. He has also heard the voices of two men mumbling in their basement.
“At first we were a little scared, but I’ve gotten used to it,” Tyler said.
Ghost hunters visited the recently remodeled home and thought whatever is in the house may not like changes that are being made.
“We think it’s cool,” Tyler said.
