Five hurt in Johnson County crash

Five people were injured in a two-vehicle accident Thursday in Johnson County.

Melissa M. Mahnken, 30, of Holden, was taken by ambulance to Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence with minor injuries.

Driver Melissa S. Burney, 28, of Higginsville, was taken by ambulance to Research Medical Center in Kansas City with moderate injuries.

Carla S. Burney, 47, and Phillip R. Burney, 49, both of Mayview, and Ava E. Burney an infant, were taken by ambulance to Research Medical Center. All were occupants in Melissa Burney’s vehicle.

The accident occurred at 3:38 p.m. as Mahnken was northbound on state Route 131 at U.S. Highway 50.

Mahnken failed to yield to Burney’s eastbound vehicle and hit the vehicle, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report.

All people involved were wearing seat belts, the report states.
