Gala raises nearly twice as much money over 2009 event for Daum endowment

The State Fair Community College Foundation’s 2010 Sweetheart Gala last month nearly doubled the fundraising total from the first event in 2009, raising more than $69,000 for the Daum Endowment for Education.

More than 280 people came out to the event at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art for an evening of music, dining and dancing that was highlighted by the Sedalia Stars dance competition.

“Last year we raised $35,000, so this huge increase is amazing,” said Jackie Almquist, executive director of the SFCC Foundation. “Sedalians definitely showed their support for the arts and college.”

Proceeds from the dinner and auctions are used to support the Daum Escape — an educational event for thousands of area fifth-grade students — artist talks and art forums, the museum resource center and other educational opportunities in the museum.

I hate to say this, but the Daum has not had a good show for quite awhile. What is currently stapled to the upper gallery walls is a sad example of why people feel they "don't get it." How about featuring some actual painters who can paint, or some of our wonderful potters in this state? We have some wonderfully talented people working in every area of art, it seems a shame to waste such a beautiful building on art that only seems to excite the elite.

How about an invitational show where they showcase Midwestern painters? The possibilities are there, it's an excellent facility, it's just stuck in this elite mentality that will continue to keep its attendance levels very low. I say it's time to make the Daum into a showcase museum that really puts forth a platform of Midwestern art.
