A Versailles teacher was charged Monday with statutory sodomy in connection with an incident involving two students.

Mark Garber is accused of engaging in sexual activity with two girls, ages 16 and 17, on March 9, according to a probable cause statement written by Sheriff’s Officer Todd L. Wright. The students called Garber and asked him to meet them at one of the students’ homes. There the two girls engaged in oral sex with Garber, court documents state.

Garber, a long-term substitute gym teacher at the middle school and assistant wrestling and football coach, was placed on administrative leave by Morgan County R-II School District on March 19.

A staff member found out about the incident and reported it to administrators, according to a statement released by the district, who notified law enforcement.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that a district employee may have betrayed the trust placed in him and may have harmed our students,” the statement, signed by Superintendent Jeffery B. Carter, states.

Garber has had no contact with the school since he was placed on leave, according to the school.
