Wheel Inn, guberburger to return

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

It’s coming back.

A Sedalia woman plans to re-open the Wheel Inn Drive-In, complete with a horseshoe shaped counter and original guberburger, at a new location on South Limit Avenue.

Judy Clark, who was a Wheel Inn employee off and on for the past 47 years, said the former owners gave permission to open the restaurant.

“It made me too sad to see it close, so I had to open it,” Clark said.

The words “Future home of the Wheel Inn” and “The original guberburger” are written on the windows of the building in the 2100 block of South Limit Avenue, between Sedalia Implement and Sedalia Automotive Car Sales.

Clark said she will offer the same menu at the new Wheel Inn, where a neon wheel will sit atop the building. Those who missed an opportunity for one last guberburger or chocolate Pepsi at the building at South Limit Avenue and West Broadway Boulevard will want no longer.

“Now they can have all they want,” Clark said.

The original restaurant, which opened in 1947, closed earlier this month to accommodate expansion of the intersection, which would limit access to the building.

A horseshoe-shaped counter, much like the first Wheel Inn, will seat 25 customers. The new location will also have booths, tables and more parking to accommodate larger crowds, Clark said. Some of the parking spots will be designated for car hop service.

Melissa Nelson, former manager of the Wheel Inn, will oversee the business on South Limit Avenue.

“I think Judy will be good,” Nelson said.

Clark said she is unsure when the Wheel Inn will re-open for business, but expects to be finished with renovations by winter.
