(StatePoint)† Diabetes continues to be a big problem in America, with over 8 percent of the population currently living with the disease, according the American Diabetes Association. And predictions from The Centers for Disease Control indicate this number will climb to over 30 percent by 2050.

However, there is much research suggesting that the most prevalent form of diabetes -- Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for around 90 percent of all cases -- can be prevented and managed with simple lifestyle changes.

The top precautions include eating right, getting exercise and quitting smoking. And if you already have diabetes, itís also important to regularly check blood glucose levels, reduce stress and keep teeth and feet healthy. For support, many seniors also rely on medical alert systems, such as those from Alert1, which can provide emergency response at the push of a button, 24 hours a day.

With some simple changes, many can avoid or manage diabetes.
