I would like to respond to a letter to the editor from Gabriele Leiter-Jones on March 1. This letter criticized the House Republicans for their failure to take action on a minimum wage bill.

I worked for a while for minimum wage for quite some time and know that people need more, but I believe this nation has more severe problems than minimum wage. We do have a large number of unemployed people living on welfare and those homeless. Statistics tell us many of these are former servicemen.

Senate Democrats led by Harry Reid have for three years failed to submit a budget, which they are obligated by law to do. I also noticed this was not mentioned and the major news media has not publicized it. I might note that North Dakota, which is busy with the Keystone Pipeline, has an unemployment rate in the 5 percent area.

There are 50 states, 30 of which have Republican governors. Those with Republican governors are doing the best job of handling such things as employment, deficit and taxes. Gov. Rick Perry, of Texas, is doing the best job.

Bill Clinton talks about the large surplus he left as president, failing to mention that he crossed the aisle and worked with Republicans to achieve this along with welfare reform.

When John Kennedy was president, he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” On March 4, 1965, with the end of the Civil War in sight, Abraham Lincoln in his second inaugural address spoke these words, “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right.”

To me, it is deeply troubling at what has happened to this great nation. God has been removed from schools, along with prayer, Christmas hymns and religious symbols removed from public property. Our group meets four times a week praying for this nation, our president and our appointed and elected officials.
