Parkhurst: Saints, goblins, ghosts and the unknown

Posted: Wednesday, October 24, 2012 11:40 pm

Say what: All Saints Eve? If you guessed Halloween, you’d be right.  The holiday honoring all saints goes back to the 17th century — I’m not sure why the people back then decided to honor saints on that particular day, I didn’t dig that far — but I suspect it had something to do with the Fall Solstice. Today, it seems to me that the holiday has lost all its reference to anything holy. Now, it seems to be all about ghosts and goblins dressing up in disguise and of course filling up your bag with candy and cookies. There’s just something alluring about dressing up in some scary costume and wandering around in the dark saying “boo.”

Although all my adult life has been spent living in the country, all my kids were inducted into the tradition of Halloween. I remember when daylight savings time came on board. It almost ruined the enhancement of the night; that extra hour of daylight was not welcome.
