Nolen: Congress, not Internet, doomed Post Office

Posted: Thursday, January 31, 2013 6:05 pm

Well, the Post Office raised the price of stamps by a penny this week. So now, stamps are 46 cents each. Every time the price increases I always remind myself that I can remember when stamps cost 3 cents each and it seems to me, that they went on at that price for years.

I have to remind myself of all the changes in communications that have gone on since letters have been sent by mail. First and foremost, there was the telegraph sending the words speeding across the miles until they reached the person they were intended for. Then there was the telephone. What a thrill it was to hear the sound of a human voice on the phone, replacing the words written on the page. And then finally, there is email, where the words disappear and before you know it they have gone from your sight to the sight of the one to which they were intended.
