Keep Smith-Cotton name as it is

Posted: Wednesday, August 15, 2007 12:00 am | Updated: 8:41 am, Wed Sep 5, 2012.

What’s in a name? Plenty, if the name is the one that will appear on the front of Sedalia’s new high school.

And when it comes to their alma mater, Sedalians show a fierce loyalty. One of the big stumbling blocks to winning voter approval for a new high school was the widespread sentiment that Smith-Cotton High School had served generations of students well and was plenty good enough for generations to come. Never mind that the building was overcrowded, the auditorium dreary, the science labs looked as though they were the 1925 originals and the antiquated electrical system couldn’t handle the load from the lights and a fan at the same time, let alone a bank of computers.
