Chalfant: Teen makes gruesome find in return from field

The Roaring ’20s are remembered as a time of snappy roadsters, bathtub gin and Charleston-dancing flappers. Cities grew and the economy was thought to be booming.

The reality, particularly for rural areas, was quite different. Economists Mark Drabenstott and Lynn Gibson refer to the 1920s as “a decade of stagnation.” A mild depression during the years of 1920 through 1922 and a recession in 1927 and 1928 marred the apparent prosperity. Small towns and rural areas declined in population. The cost of manufactured goods increased, causing difficulties for consumers.
