Parkhurst: Fair's theme is a nod to the past and skills many have forgotten

With so many big events happening at the fairgrounds year-round nowadays, it would be easy to think of the Missouri State Fair as just another big venue. Well, it is not. The state fair is you and me showing off our best.

The theme for this year’s fair is “Then and Wow,” which I think means how much the presentation of this spectacle has changed over the past 110 years. It is still an agricultural fair with various livestock being showcased, along with the gardeners and their displays of vegetables, canned fruits and products of all kinds. The variety of products, from bakery items to the largest pumpkin, is mind-boggling. Yet all of these things dredge up memories of yesterday.
