Chalfant: Sedalia Tribune focused on ordinary concerns of ordinary people

While the newspapers published in large cities focus on world, national and state events, newspapers in small communities tend to focus on local issues. The everyday happenings of ordinary people reveal a great deal about a community. The January 13, 1933, issue of the Sedalia Tribune, published by E. F. Eulinberg, provides a glimpse into the lives of Sedalia’s African American community.

The church has long been a central focus of African-American life, and pastors were among the most respected people in the community. In 1933, six churches served Sedalia’s African-American community, offering worship, Bible study and communion served on the first Sunday of each month..
