Letter: Sedalia Should be Fair to Fair
The Missouri State Fair has existed for over 110 years, long before Southwest Village or Katy Trails Estates, not to mention State Fair Community College, came in to being.
Fair officials are asking to close Clarendon Road for 11 days. The state owns the property on both sides of the road.
I am always amazed at the lack of support the City of Sedalia gives the Fair, but they sure want the tourism dollars that are generated during that 11 days, and they sure benefit from the thousands of dollars in sales tax that is paid during this event.
I would even go so far as to say that at one time or another, most families in Sedalia have had a member draw a pay check for working the “fair.”
Have you ever looked around? A lot of your school teachers work the fair. Your district superintendent and family have worked the fair for years.
The youths of Sedalia are able to earn a few honest dollars. Future leaders are formed with the FFA and 4-H showings.
I would like to know who lives in those housing additions that can have the pull to influence the “fathers” of the city.
And good grief, SFCC makes some serious change off the paid parking on their lot during the fair. So what if someone is inconvienenced briefly? Look at the big picture. You sure want the 6,000 campers to purchase gas while in town and shop the grocery stores.
Shame on you, Sedalia.
