Chalfant: Hughes descendent faced robbery charge

Posted: Tuesday, January 22, 2013 6:41 pm

The Hughes family of Hughesville was praised in the 1882 History of Pettis County, being named as part of the founders of Cooper County and among “those who braved the perils and endured the hardships of a primitive life to establish the civilization that we now enjoy.”

Samuel Hughes came from Tennessee and settled near Pilot Grove in Cooper County in 1824. His son, Thomas J. Hughes, was born on Jan. 23, 1829. Thomas married Sally C. Taylor, of Cooper County, in 1853. The couple had four children — Isaac Newton, William, Susan and Lucy — before Sally Taylor died in 1866.
