Satnan: Scholarship another chapter in Rudy’s life

Posted: Friday, June 22, 2012 12:00 am | Updated: 12:10 pm, Wed Sep 5, 2012.

The first time I saw Rudy Grother, he came into the Democrat newsroom and, without a word, placed small origami animals on a couple of desks and departed. I thought, “Well, that was odd.”

Then, when we started doing our “Everyday People” weekly feature, reporter Courtney Childers profiled Grother and his penchant for making and sharing origami. Through the story I learned that he had been an elementary school librarian and turned to the paper-folding artform to encourage students to read. He continued making and sharing his origami art after moving to Winchester Meadows, and every couple of months after the story was published, Grother would stop by our newsroom to drop off two or three of his creations.
