Chalfant: Public schools improved with Buchanan at helm

In 1882, the writer of the History of Pettis County deplored the condition of education in the county schools, noting that “the county can boast of but few professional teachers.”

The reason was, in part, because of a decision made by the General Assembly that abolished the office of county superintendent of schools after 1874.
