Latisha Koetting: I have bittersweet memories of men who served us, our nation

When I started writing this column, I had no idea how many tears I would shed. As I reflected on veterans I’ve lost over the past year, I realized it’s higher number than in past years. Each loss is bittersweet. Bitter because I won’t be able to visit with them again, but sweet because I got the privilege of meeting them.

Tom Nelson, of Sedalia, was one of the first Korean War veterans to share his story. He died May 26, 2011, at the age of 81. A few weeks later, William Golden died June 12 at the age of 82. When I interviewed him, he insisted on wearing his full Navy uniform. He was a proud chief warrant officer who looked absolutely adorable.
