Our View: Thanksgiving retail ban measure is a real turkey

Despite tea party contentions and Grover Norquist’s foot-stamping tantrums, government does have a role in our society and it often serves beneficial purposes. That said, there are times when those who make the gears grind leave us wondering if they understand government’s role and scope.

Case in point: Missouri Rep. Jeff Roorda, a Democrat from Barnhart, who on Monday filed what he is calling the “Thanksgiving Family Protection Act,” which would prohibit all retail establishments, with the exceptions of restaurants, gas stations and drug stores, from opening on Thanksgiving.
