U.S. should be selective where it sends military
I have a question: Just what role are we to play in the world? Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan have turned out to be a political disaster, correct? Now before you get angry at the above statement, let me explain.
To the best of my knowledge, our military has done its job and did it well. Iraq/Afghanistan same story. While serving with the 1/7th Cavalry in 1965-66, we operated on several different tactical operations with the Army Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) soldiers.
Sorry, but they could not be trusted. If a unit was on your left or right flank, you watched their movement just as hard as you did for the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). On two different occasions they were caught setting booby traps in our area. A swift court-martial was held and an execution was carried out in our presence by their commander. Yes, our efforts were noble, but they did not work.
Is this the same story for our present-day efforts in Afghanistan? I think so. Our military and political effort is costing the United States of America dearly in lives and resources. Must we send troops to the four corners of the earth? Is it our responsibility to police every rogue situation on the planet?
Letís be very selective on why, when, where we send our military. We are a strong nation, but with strength comes responsibility. Please, letís finish the job there ó whatever that might be ó and come home. God bless America, my home sweet home.
