Nolen: Every state should have one place that never changes

I began Black History Month with a trip to historic Arrow Rock. I love history and I love Arrow Rock because there are so many memories there.

We attended a lecture concerning George Caleb Bingham’s “Order No. 11.” The painting depicts the third in a series of acts of violence committed during the Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas border. General Order No. 11 was the Union Army’s response to a raid in August 1863 in which more than 150 men and boys were killed. The order mandated that that anyone who could not prove loyalty to the Union evacuate their homes.
