Many great things are accomplished with the quiet dedication of a few amazing volunteers in our community. Volunteers are the key to a successful community.

Part of being a great volunteer is loving what you’re doing. Find something that you’re passionate about or something that inspires you, and then find a need in your community. There are dozens of reasons why you should volunteer — you just need to find the one that feels right.

Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community and country. The intangible benefits alone — such as pride, satisfaction and accomplishment — are worthwhile reasons to serve. In addition, when we share our time and talents, we solve problems, strengthen communities, improve lives, connect to others and transform our own lives.

Sedalia relies on the active participation of residents volunteering their time and effort to sustain the quality of our community. Advisory board and commission members exemplify this spirit of volunteerism by lending their talents to benefit our town. Appointment to a board or commission in Sedalia is an honor that brings both responsibility and opportunity.

Board and commission member duties include reviewing items and issues at the request of the citizens or city staff or of interest to the advisory body. Board and commission members provide recommendations that assist the city in making decisions, and also serve as ambassadors to the community, informing and educating the public regarding the purposes of the board or commission on which they serve.

The city has several boards and commissions to serve on depending on your interest. This spring, there could be the opportunity for you to offer your assistance by serving on a board or commission. Each year there are always openings on the boards as people choose to volunteer in a different direction or changes in their life happen. The boards and commissions available are: Airport Board, Board of Appeals, Bothwell Regional Health Center Board, Central Business & Cultural District, Citizens Committee for Smart Growth, Citizens Traffic Advisory Commission, Firemen’s Retirement Fund, Housing Authority Board of Directors, Park Board, Planning & Zoning Commission, Plumbers Examining Board, Police Personnel Board, Policemen’s Retirement Fund, Public Library Board, Public Works Board, Tax Increment Financing District, Tree Board, or the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

All boards and commissions are listed on the city website (city

ofsedalia.com) along with their meeting schedules and length of terms. More details regarding each board and commission may be obtained through my office. One other point: Current board members with expiring terms may be asked to serve another term.

Board member motivation can be summed up in one word: Sharing! Volunteers share their time. They share their skills and talents, even their money. But above all, they share human experience. They know that this attitude is the true measure of success in life and that it makes society strong and healthy.

Society is not viable without the support of volunteers, although we are well aware of the fact that the important contributions of volunteers are often overlooked.

Volunteering takes many shapes and forms — from one-on-one support at a personal level to community service, from mutual support in self-help groups to participation in broad-based movements and campaigns. Voluntary action is as varied as the creativity of volunteers.

We again are but what we give back to our fellow men and women, and volunteers have the courage to believe that what they do will make a real difference. Volunteers can help transform all our societies for the benefit of all people. They put their hands and their minds and, most of all, their hearts at the service of others. Their courage and dedication should be an inspiration for others.

I look forward to adding new names and faces to our city volunteer list.
