Chalfant: Stock market crash ended golden age of Sedalia banks

As the intersection of railroads, a center of industry, and the hub of retail and wholesale trade, Sedalia was also a center of finance. Local banks loaned money to finance the purchase and operation of farms and businesses, and held mortgages on homes. These financial institutions both reflected and affected Sedalia’s prosperity.

In 1886, the Ohio Street Methodist Church located on the northwest corner of Fourth Street and Ohio Avenue sold its property to the Missouri Trust Company, a financial institution with $10,000 of capital. O.A. Crandall, Frank Hayman, Joseph Higgins, Arthur Morey and T.T. Cufford served as members of its board of directors.
