Hellcats take on the Germans

Posted: Sunday, August 14, 2011 12:00 am | Updated: 9:30 am, Wed Dec 19, 2012.

After the Battle of the Bulge, our division was attached to the 3rd Army under the command of Gen. Patton. We were the “Mysterious Division” so-called because all the markings on our vehicles were painted over so we could not be identified. This was done to confuse the Nazis.

We were assigned to a flanking probe and soon ran into very stiff resistance. The Nazis were dug in with heavy tanks and artillery, forming a defense line that we could not go through with our light tanks. Heavy tanks were called in to help and light tank crews dismounted and fought as infantry.
