Everyone in the service of our country during World War II had different experiences. One that I remember was the chow line. I was inducted into the Army at Jefferson Barracks in July 1942. Everyone was shipped to a new camp being built at Camp Carson, Colo. The new division was the 89th Infantry. I was assigned to F Company, 355th Regiment. Capt. Carl Hubbuck, of Alabama, was the commanding officer.
After 13 weeks of basic training, we were ready for field training. We hiked with full field packs several miles to the bivouac area. We pitched a tent with our buddy and slept on the ground. The officers slept on cots.
