The 89th Infantry Division was organized at Camp Carson, Colo., on July 15, 1942. I arrived by troop train the same week from St. Louis and was placed in F Company, 355th Infantry. The military scientists in Washington were looking for new angles to fight a war in rough terrain with few roads, such as in Sicily and Italy.

The 89th Division was picked to be the new streamline (light) and was organized on Aug. 1, 1943. The division was issued 532 hand carts never to be forgotten by the GI’s who pulled them in all kinds of weather, terrain and roads.
