Stephanie Oswald, chairwoman, Alexandria Malone, Amy Galchenko and two-time banner honoree Brittney Castle worked on the Otterville Future Business Leaders of America Community Service project “Ride, Rock or Walk-a-thon” during the 2011-12 school year.

This activity consisted of working with school patrons, community members and both Mary Etta Streeter and Cheryl Paige to assist in the Relay for Life contribution toward helping to find a cure for cancer which both ladies have endured.

The project started with a month of weekly activities last October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month with students at Otterville School donating a $1 each week if they participated in the dress-up days. The staff at school was allowed to wear jeans for a $2 donation per day for the month also. The finale was a ride, walk or rock-a-thon activity. Individuals as young as 6 participated. Baked items were sold, along with camouflage T-shirts which carried the theme of “Help Make Cancer Disappear” by listing names of family or friends who have been affected with cancer.

The Otterville FBLA competed against 20 chapters at the district competition and took first place. This had never been done by this chapter. They later competed at the national competition against 65 other chapters. They placed in the top 12 in the nation.
