S-C Junior High receives honor at Cardinals Game
Smith-Cotton Junior High School is one of three schools in Missouri and Illinois to be awarded the 2013 Champions for Character “Celebrating Service Learning” honor, sponsored by CharacterPlus and Cardinals Care.
Six students, along with two teachers, were allowed onto the field at Busch Stadium on May 14 for a pre-game acknowledgment. Their picture and the school’s name were displayed on the Jumbotron during the ceremony.
The students — Annabelle Lorenz, Nathan Brock, Elijah Choate, Megan Osburn, Kali Heavener and Josh Goalder — were selected based on essays they had written stressing the importance of service and character. They were accompanied to the game by teachers Ryan Boyer and Michael Desmond.
Over the past year, junior high students have worked with the State Fair Community College Aggies program to beautify the campus, raised funds for the Sedalia Animal Shelter and collected donations for and purchased a bench downtown dedicated to the city’s first responders, among other projects.
As part of the junior high’s application for the honor, school leaders noted that “service learning plays an important role in developing responsible, caring citizens who learn at an early age to take an active role in society.”
