State Fair Community College held its graduation ceremony on Friday. These happy Roadrunners are pictured eagerly waiting outside for the ceremony to begin. According to SFCC, a record 857 degrees and certificates were awarded to 756 candidates for graduation during Friday night’s commencement exercises, including 431 associate of arts degrees, 255 associate of applied science degrees, 34 associate of arts in teaching degrees, two associate of science degrees, 80 professional certificates, and 55 skills certificates. The numbers include students who attended SFCC-Lake of the Ozarks, SFCC-Clinton and SFCC-Whiteman AFB.

I had just finished a five-mile walk with my friend and found this glorious sunset when we returned to our vehicles. I pulled out my phone hoping to get a picture, but had no idea it would be so beautiful!”

Five local Girl Scouts were honored recently at a Camp Sacajawea ceremony for their achievements. They all received their Bronze Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. From left are Alexus Rissler, Cheyenne Johnson, Valerie Rissler, Danielle Spencer and Shelbi Miller from Smithton Troop 30752. “I am so proud of the girls for all their hard work and community service involvement in earning their Bronze Awards,” said troop leader Karen Hill.

Paul Robert Ford, of Sedalia, was killed in Korea on Nov. 16, 1952. His brother escorted his body back to Sedalia. He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery on Feb. 14, 1953.
Officers with the Sedalia Police Department served a search warrant at a home in the 600 block of South Osage Avenue early Thursday morning and found a pound a meth, $18,500 in cash and a handgun as well as drug
packaging supplies.

Herb and Coleene Mittelhauser, of Sedalia, and Tom and Carolyn Miller, of Green Ridge, recently took a riverboat cruise on the Natchez in New Orleans. The couples took a copy of the Sedalia Democrat with them and posed for this photograph.
Bothwell Auxiliary Volunteer Marge Watson recently accepted an award from the Community Blood Center of Kansas City recognizing Sedalia as a member of the Community Star Club for having donated more than 400 units of blood in 2012. Watson helped coordinate the three community blood drives Bothwell Regional Health Center hosted in 2012. The Community Blood Center supplies blood products to Bothwell so donations are more likely to remain local.
The proposed new routes for The Bus would bring service to Sedalia’s outlying areas including Menard’s to the west, Smith-Cotton High School to the south and the Boonville Street trailer park to the east. All three routes would meet at State Fair Shopping Center for transfers.
Smith-Cotton High School’s Team SCREAM recently placed 78th of 100 teams in its division during the FIRST Robotics Competition World Championships, held last week in St. Louis. With April being Autism Awareness Month, the Smith-Cotton Choral Society on Wednesday donated $125 to the Sedalia School District 200 Autism Spectrum Program.
