Letters to the Editor policies:

The Sedalia Democrat encourages readers to submit letters to the editor of up to 300 words. All letters must include your full name, home address, occupation and a daytime phone number. Your name, city of residence and occupation will be published.

All letters will be verified by phone prior to publication. If we are unable to contact you, your letter will be held until we can. To encourage multiple viewpoints writers are limited to one published letter per month.

We reserve the right to reject letters or edit them for clarity, grammar, length, good taste or to prevent libel. We do not accept letters that are attacks on businesses or private individuals, poetry or letter-writing campaigns. Only letters written exclusively to The Sedalia Democrat will be published. Letters written to a third party or more than one newspaper will not be accepted.

The Sedalia Democrat will not knowingly publish factually incorrect information. Letters containing libelous statements or those intended as advertising will not be published. We do not publish thank-you letters.

Persons wishing to publicly thank individuals or businesses may do so by running a Thank You ad in the classified section. All letters to the editor become the property of The Sedalia Democrat and may be published in print, electronic or other formats.

The editor will consider for publication guest essays on topics of public interest.
