Correct spelling pays off for students

Fifth-grader Joe Snelling, left, correctly spelled “magnolia” to win the third annual Sedalia Middle School Scripps Spelling Bee held March 13 at the school. Snelling won in the seventh round, beating out fellow fifth-grader Mason Mateja, center, who took second place, and sixth-grader Elizabeth Matz, who finished third. In winning the bee, Joe earned a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Bee on May 30-31; he also won a U.S. Savings Bond, an Encyclopedia Britannica online subscription and a Webster’s Third New International Dictionary. Mason received an Amazon gift card, an Encyclopedia Britannica online subscription and a Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, while Elizabeth took home an Amazon gift card and an Encyclopedia Britannica online subscription.
