Samantha Unkel came off the bench to score 19 points as the Green Ridge girls basketball team beat La Monte 73-52 in the consolation semifinal of the W-K Kaysinger Conference Tournament on Thursday at the Fred E. Davis Mulitpurpose Center.
Unkel had 14 in the first half alone with many of her buckets coming in transition after steals.
“She has a really good anticipation for where the ball’s going to be,” said Green Ridge coach Donnie Mayes. “In practice she shows it by stepping into the passing lane just at the right time. It’s finally starting to come around defensively for us.”
Clare Chamberlin added 24 points and eight rebounds for Green Ridge, scoring 12 in the third quarter. Libby Dove added 14 points.
Four La Monte players scored in double figures. Vada DeMotte scored 14, Madison Harris added 13 and Sandra Arroyo scored 12. Cathy Butts was held scoreless in the first half before scoring 11 in the second half.
“We came up with a couple of things we were going to try to do to slow her down,” Mayes said. “She’s going to get her points. We gave them some different looks and I think it disrupted her rhythm a little bit.”
Green Ridge jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead and led 27-13 after one quarter. La Monte had the lead down to six at 27-21 with 4:22 to play in the second quarter before Green Ridge scored the last seven points of the half.
Green Ridge (15-7) will face Cole Camp in the fifth-place game at 5 p.m. Friday.
La Monte (10-13) will play at Prairie Home at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
