SFCC nets 30 straight points
After falling behind 5-0 in the opening 3 minutes of their game against Crowder, the Lady Roadrunners ran off 30 unanswered points to seize control.
They improved to 17-2 with a 78-46 victory over the Lady Riders at Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on Tuesday night.
Shytoria Davis got State Fair rolling. She made a field goal and hit a pair of free throws to pull the Lady Roadrunners within 5-1. Davis led all scorers with 14 points.
Amber Mays heated up and pushed her team ahead for good with 15:33 to play in the first half.
She drove into the lane, drew contact and sank both free throws.
On the next State Fair possession, she drove the lane again, beat two Lady Riders and made a layup.
After holding Crowder to a 30-second shot-clock violation — one of four in the first half by the Lady Riders — Mays again penetrated through a crowded lane and made a layup, putting her club up 10-5.
A steal by Emma Tucker gave the ball right back to State Fair and Mays capitalized.
She found Bradleigh Miller in the lane. Miller made the field goal and was fouled on the play. The free throw put State Fair up by eight and was followed by a steal by Mays.
The 30-point run was capped by a 3-pointer by Vanessa Koonce with 6:50 to play in the half.
The Lady Roadrunners went into the half ahead 40-14, and stretched their lead to as many as 35 points.
State Fair dominated inside. It outrebounded the Lady Riders 39-23 and held a 25-7 edge for points in the paint.
State Fair’s depth was superior as well. Its reserve players outscored Crowder 25-7.
Five State Fair players scored in double figures. Alex Simpson and Tucker scored 13 points each.
Miller finished with 10 points, while Mays added 10 points and five steals.
The Lady Roadrunners will travel to Park Hills on Saturday to face Mineral Area in another Region 16 game.
“If we win that game on the road, that will leave us 4-1 (in the region)” said State Fair coach Darren Pannier.
“That game on the road Saturday is going to be a huge game for us to get the one or two ... seed in the region.”
