The State Fair Community College women’s basketball team had 20 steals and balanced scoring Wednesday night to win its first game in 2008.

The Lady Roadrunners improved to 14-1 with a 77-59 victory over the Penn Valley Lady Scouts. Five different players scored in double figures for State Fair.

Trevonna Cannon led State Fair with 15 points. Amber Mays had 14, LaTice Jones 12, Shytoria Davis 10 and Vanessa Koonce 10.

The Lady Roadrunners jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but Penn Valley fought back and tied the score at 10.

State Fair extended the lead to double digits mid-way through the first half when Emma Tucker sank a pair of free throws, making the score 24-13.

Penn Valley ran off seven straight points and went into halftime down 32-29.

State Fair utilized swarming defense early in the second half, holding the Lady Scouts scoreless through the first seven-plus minutes of the second.

“One thing I thought we did well in the second half, we didn’t put them at the charity line,” said State Fair head coach Darren Pannier.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Mays came up with three steals. Trevonna Cannon added a steal, and Davis came up with a block.

Davis unofficially finished with 10 blocks and eight rebounds.

“(Shytoria) can alter a lot of shots,” Pannier said. “She really did a good job tonight of extending her arms into the perimeter.”

Mays finished with seven steals and six rebounds.

The Lady Roadrunners will host Three Rivers in their Region 16 opener at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
