College baseball: Central Missouri sweeps Missouri Western
The second-ranked Central Missouri Mules swept an MIAA doubleheader from Truman State 10-1 and 10-8 in 11 innings on Saturday at the Truman Baseball Park in Kirksville.
The Mules swept the four game series and have now won 80 consecutive games against the Bulldogs dating back to 1989.
The Mules (11-1, 7-1 MIAA) jumped out to an early lead in Game 1 with three first inning runs.
John Oropeza had a two-run single to get the Mules on the board and he later scored on a throwing error by the Bulldogs (1-11, 0-8 MIAA).
UCM added a single run in the third inning on a Brad Wilson RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Mules blew the game wide open in the fourth with four runs. Oropeza had an RBI single.
Albert Selanders had a sacrifice fly and Oropeza scored on the same play on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 7-0. Chase Graskewicz added an RBI single to make it 8-0.
UCM made it 9-0 in the top of the fifth on a Jordan Coons RBI single. The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the inning, but Central Missouri tallied another run in the seventh on a Kevin Gratza RBI single to make it 10-1.
Kurtis Schuyler (2-0) allowed one run on five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Bret Gerstner (0-1) took the loss for TSU after giving up eight runs, three earned, on six hits in 3 2-3 innings. He walked six batters and struck out three.
Truman jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game 2 with a pair of first inning runs.
The Mules cut the lead in half with a single tally in the second on Gratza’s RBI double and took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Oropeza had a sac fly to tie the game, and Coons singled home Gabe Thibodeau to give the Mules a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a Paul Trenhaile two-run home run to regain the lead 4-3.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the fourth inning to open up a 7-3 lead.
The lead held until the top of the seventh when Gratza belted a two-out grand slam to right to tie the game at 7.
The Mules went in front 8-7 in the top of the eighth inning on a Bret Schwartz RBI single. UCM had Truman down to its final strike in the ninth, but Daniel Jewett singled home Steven Rose to tie the game and force extra innings.
Neither team scored in the 10th inning forcing an 11th. With two on and two outs, Graskewicz roped a single up the middle to drive in two runs and give the Mules a 10-8 lead.
Coons (1-0), who came on to pitch in the 10th, retired the Bulldogs in the 11th. Coons earned the win after allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
Chris Allard took the loss for Truman after allowing six runs on seven hits in four innings of relief.
The Mules are back in action on Tuesday when they host Rockhurst in a single nonconference
game at 3 p.m. on Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
