Smith-Cotton senior Ryan Akin was named goalkeeper of the year on the Missouri Soccer Coaches Association Central Missouri all-region team.

S-C coach Ethan Weller was pleased with the strides Akin took this season.

“His biggest improvement was working on taking balls out of the air off crosses and corners. That was a hole in his game last year,” Weller said. “He did a ton of work in the weight room, and coach (Michael) Desmond worked on a lot on skills (with him).”

Akin’s teammate, senior forward Jacob Lamb, also made the all-region team.

Lamb led the Tigers with 20 goals and he had eight assists.

“People were always looking to him, getting the ball to him in the final third of the field,” Weller said of Lamb’s goal-scoring ability. “I thought he made tremendous improvement from last season. He didn’t have a lot of success. This year, he stayed more composed in front of the goal and waited until one of the most important moments of the season, the St. Pius X game, (to have his best game.) I’m proud of him.”

Lamb’s four goals propelled  Smith-Cotton (16-8) to a 4-0 win over St. Pius X to complete the school’s first undefeated West Central Conference boys soccer season.
