The Skyline boys basketball team kept Smithton at arm’s length Saturday in the W-K Holiday Shootout.

Skyline took an early lead, withstood a number of Smithton comeback attempts and pulled away late for a 63-42 win at Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.

Smithton coach Rich Pond was frustrated with his team’s inability to stop Skyline’s perimeter shooting, which resulted in nine 3-pointers.

“Every time we’d cut it close, they’d hit one,” said Pond.

“It’s deflating, you know, even for me as a coach because we played so hard to get back into it.”

After an opening basket by Smithton, Skyline ran off the next 11 points.

Adam Wagenknecht ended that run with a pair of driving layups for Smithton.

Skyline built on its 15-8 lead after one quarter with a quick basket and a 3-pointer by Brennan Holt to take a 21-10 lead.

Once again Smithton answered, this time with consecutive 3-pointers by Chance Williams, Sean Loomis and Ethan Marino to cut the deficit to two.

Skyline responded with the scoring of guards Tanner Kelley and Holt to take a 29-22 lead at halftime.

Another quick start to a quarter by Skyline gave it a 40-26 lead midway through the third, as Holt continued to shoot well from behind the arc.

Holt led all scorers with 22 points, including five 3-pointers.

Smithton (1-6) made one final run as the third quarter neared its end.

An 8-0 burst closed the gap to 40-34, but Skyline responded, taking a 45-36 lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter belonged to Skyline, as it continued to shoot well and outscored Smithton 18-6.

Trevor Lindsey did the damage inside to compliment Holt’s outside scoring.

“They shot the lights out. They shot it real well,” said Pond of Skyline.

Marino paced Smithton with 12 points.

Lindsey scored 16 for Skyline.
