ROUNDUP: SFCC upsets Indian Hills
State Fair Community College notched its biggest victory of the season Monday night in Ottumwa, Iowa.
The Roadrunners basketball team beat perennial national power Indian Hills 78-73.
Indians Hills, which received votes in the most recent NJCAA Division I poll, struggled against State Fair’s defense.
“We played a 3-2 zone that stymied them a little bit,” State Fair assistant coach Kevin Thomas said. “They had a hard time figuring it out.”
Sanijay Watts scored a game-high 26 points. Nnamdi Nadili added 20 points, and Shasta Scott had 11.
Dwight Buycks and Leon Powell paced Indian Hills (14-5) with 21 points each.
The Roadrunners (10-6) led 42-36 at halftime.
Lincoln 57, Tuscumbia 51
Jason Culpepper and Marshall Humphreys took part in a shootout Monday night at the Otterville Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament.
Lincoln’s Jason Culpepper made seven 3-pointers en route to 36 points, and two-time all-stater Humphreys scored 28 points including six 3-pointers. Culpepper won the duel, and his team won the game 57-51.
Lincoln (9-3) wraps up pool play against Jamestown at 5 p.m. today. If the Cardinals win, they would advance to the championship game. Tuscumbia will meet Jamestown at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Smithton 78, Otterville 36
Smithton’s Alina Voronenko scored a game-high 27 points Monday night in the Otterville Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament.
Heather Letourneau had 17 points as Smithton improved to 9-1. Brittney Hotsenpiller had 10. Marci Simmons paced Otterville with 20 points.
Smithton will face the Boonville junior varsity at 8 p.m. Wednesday. If Smithton wins, it would advance to the championship game.
Otterville will face the Boonville JV at 6:30 p.m. today.
Tuscumbia 32, Lincoln 20
Tuscumbia’s Kirsten Patterson scored 12 points Monday night in the first round of the Otterville Holiday Classic.
Kara Ward paced the Lincoln girls basketball team with seven points and 11 rebounds.
Lincoln (3-6) will face Chilhowee at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Tuscumbia (7-2) will take on Chilhowee at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. If Tuscumbia wins, it would qualify for the championship game.
