The Sedalia Post 642 Travelers batted around in the seventh inning Saturday and beat the Lee’s Summit Pirates 9-6 in an elimination game of the Zone 2 senior Legion baseball tournament at Blue Springs.
The Travelers entered the seventh with a 4-2 deficit.
Darion Lawrence reached base on an error by the shortstop to open the inning, and Luke Archibeque singled.
Chance McMullin drove home Lawrence with a single, and Caleb Tanguay singled home Archibeque to tie the score at 6.
Ian Dotson was struck by a pitch before Dalton Christian popped up to the third baseman.
Matt Miles singled home two more runs, and Henry Tietz was hit by a pitch and Zach Bishop drew a walk to load the bases.
Lawrence drove in the final run on a fielder’s choice.
Miles was the winning pitcher, permitting two runs on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings.
Miles relieved starter A.J. Paul who lasted only 2 2-3 inning, yielding four runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
The Travelers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Christian and Paul singled. Tietz followed with a run-scoring single, and Bishop drove home two with a base hit.
In the top of the third, Dotson doubled home McMullin for a 4-0 Sedalia lead.
The Pirates tied the score with four in the bottom of the third and went ahead 6-4 with two in the fifth.
The Travelers (31-22) were scheduled to face the winner of the St. Joseph-Lee’s Summit Outlaws game at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Note: The last time the Travelers advanced to the state tournament was 2009, not 2002 as indicated in a previous story.
