The Sedalia Bombers used a three-run fifth inning to beat the Clarinda As 4-2 in their MINK League home opener Monday at Dey Field at Liberty Park.

The Bombers (1-2) only got three hits, but used a couple of Clarinda errors and a sacrifice to grab a 4-1 lead in the fifth.

What won us the game tonight was capitalizing on mistakes for sure, said Bombers manager Jud Kindle.

Christian Bunch reached on an error to start the inning, while Zack Weigel was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.

Bunch scored to make it 2-1 on the next play after a throwing error to third by As catcher Austin Ascherl. The batter, Ty White, made it to second, while Weigel advanced to third.

Tony Sandifer hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Weigel and make it 3-1.

White scored from third to make it 4-1 after Zach Lavy grounded out to first.

The As got one run in the eighth inning after Bud Britt singled to right field to score Keith Cormier from second base, but the Bombers held on for the 4-2 win.

Starting pitcher Robert Greco got the win in his first start of the season. He allowed one run off five hits. He also walked five and struck out three.

I dont think it was his best outing, but good pitchers find ways to win, Kindle said.

The first two strikeouts were the first two batters of the game. Dominick Francia and DeMarco Poindexter both struck out looking.

Grecos final strikeout came in the sixth, as he struck out Justin Paul to end the top half of the inning.

Greco is a veteran, Kindle said. Hes been here. Hes not nervous at all. He went out and gave us a strong outing.

Preston Tarkington got the save, as he struck out the first two batters of the ninth inning, and ended the game by forcing a fly out to deep left field.

Braden Riddle got the loss for the As, as he allowed all four runs, but none of them were earned.

The Bombers also used defense to get the win. They got a 4-6-3 double play in the second inning, and a 6-4-3 double play in the third.

I have to give it to the defense today, Greco said. I was struggling a little it. I had way too many walks today. Other than that, I tried to show my stuff, but it just didnt really happen today.

Greco is hopeful with the MLB draft coming up at the end of the week.

Im just keeping an open mind and keep playing my best, he said. If it doesnt work out, it doesnt work out.

The Bombers will visit the Ozark Generals at 7 p.m. today, and at the Joplin Outlaws at 7 p.m. Wednesday. They return home at 7 p.m. on Thursday against the Generals.
