PREP ROUNDUP: S-C tops tough district rival, 2-0

Cole Camp baseball team wins on walk-off homer

The Smith-Cotton girls soccer team served notice to the other teams in their district Monday night at Susie Ditzfeld Field.

Jessica Greer and Tiffany Wehmeyer scored a goal apiece in the first half, as the Lady Tigers beat Helias 2-0.

“It’s a huge win for us,” S-C coach Shawn Cairer said. “Since I’ve been around, we’ve never beat them.”

Goalkeeper Cristian Sharp earned the shutout.

“She made a  couple of big saves to keep it scoreless,” Cairer said.

Sharp didn’t have to face a lot of shots on goal for Smith-Cotton, which improved to 10-2.

“Our defense was great,” Cairer said. “It’s the best game I’ve seen our defense play. “

Smith-Cotton’s junior varsity won 1-0.

Sacred Heart 9, KC Lutheran 0

Alyssa Hanlon and Maeghan Johnson scored two goals each Monday night to lead Sacred Heart.

Cassie Blackmore, Justine Dover, Megan Moore, Sydney Stewart and Devin Wadley scored one goal apiece in a girls soccer match at Clover Dell Park.

Goalkeeper Laura Hunkins only made one save to earn the shutout for Sacred Heart, which improved to 3-1.

Clinton 4, Stover 0

The Stover girls soccer team struggled Friday in Clinton.

“We were missing three of our key players, so lots of girls had to play positions that they weren’t accustomed to,” coach Emily Allsop said. “However, there are no excuses for playing without effort.”

She commended the play of Kayla Eckhoff, Morgan Marriott and Jayla Wilson.

BOYS TENNIS
Smith-Cotton 6, Clinton 3

Matt Roehrs’ debut as Smith-Cotton’s No. 1 singles player ended with a win.

He beat Paul Henry 8-2 in a West Central Conference boys tennis match at Clinton.

Former No. 1 Chris Shepard beat Garrett Brazil 8-4 in No. 2 singles.

Anthony Tsao and Josh Melton won their singles matches for S-C. Tsao beat Alex Jones 8-2 and Melton beat James Glasscock 8-2.

In the other singles matches, Andy Skaggs beat Dustin Bergman 8-6 and Nathan Suthoff beat Ryan Bell 9-7.

Smith-Cotton (2-3) won in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Shepard-Roehrs beat Henry-Brazil 8-1 and Melton and Adam Tilley beat Suthoff-Glasscock 8-2.

In the other doubles match, Jones-Skaggs beat Tsao-Bell 9-7.

Higginsville 7, Knob Noster 2

Conor Krause and Brian Cass won in singles for Knob Noster on Monday in a Missouri River Valley Conference boys tennis match at Higginsville.

Krause beat Zach Kramer 8-6 and Cass beat Patrick Swartz 8-2.

In other singles matches, Daniel Rhoades  beat Ryan Brito 8-1, Tanner Wann beat Andrew Cates 8-6, Ray Beam beat Tim Madison 8-4 and Kellee Williams beat Carlo Angeles 8-1.

In doubles, Rhoades-Wann beat Krause-Cass 8-3, Kramer-Swartz beat Brito-Cates 8-2 and Beam-Williams beat Alec Ake and Caleb Files 8-0.

BOYS GOLF
Helias Tournament

Smith-Cotton placed sixth Monday in the eight-team Helias boys golf tournament at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club near New Bloomfield.

The Tigers carded a 361. Helias won with a 315.

Jacob Burkholder led S-C with an 83 on the par-72 course. He finished eighth overall. Brendan Hurley’s 89, Nick Banner’s 90 and Tommy Squires’ 99 rounded out the Tigers’ score.

BASEBALL
Cole Camp 12, Eugene 9

Tyler Rusk hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh Monday night to lead the Cole Camp baseball team to victory.

Eugene led until the final pitch. It scored five runs in the second inning and took a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Garrett Gilbert picked up the win, allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk in one inning.

Gilbert and Ron Herdman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored each to lead Cole Camp, which improved to 4-1. Corey Vance went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Rusk finished 1-for-3.

Concordia 11, Sweet Springs 6

Carter Brown pitched 3 2/3 innings of solid relief to give Concordia’s baseball team a chance to rally Monday night at Sweet Springs.

He allowed one run — none earned — on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Ron Hunter took the loss. He permitted 11 runs — 10 earned — on 12 hits with two strikeouts and four walks in seven innings.

Sweet Sprints led 5-3 when Brown entered the game.

Corey Deatherage went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Concordia’s attack. Brown went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Drew Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Orioles, who improved to 3-5. Logan Lenz and Tyler Tolias went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI each.

SOFTBALL
Northwest 11, St. Mary’s 1

Mariah Wiskur guided the Northwest softball team to victory from the pitcher’s circle and the batter’s box Monday at Hughesville.

Wiskur (5-0) struck out 10 in five innings to earn the win. She went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Meredith Norfleet went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and an RBI. Emily Reid went 2-for-3 for the Lady Mustangs, who improved to 7-0.
