COLUMN: Windsor closing in on top-four finish
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Greyhounds should equal their third-place finish of 2003
The Windsor football team, a long-time cellar dweller in the I-70 Conference, is making a bid for a second-place finish in 2008.
The Greyhounds, who have only finished in the top half of the league once since 2001, moved into a tie for second place on Friday night with a 34-12 win over Santa Fe in Alma.
The Greyhounds, who finished third in the I-70 in 2003, improved to 4-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. They are tied with Sweet Springs for second place, two games behind Orrick.
Windsor gained 477 total yards against Santa Fe, which fell to 1-5 and 0-3.
Matt Madole and Corey Buford provided a one-two punch for the Greyhounds’ running game.
Madole ran for 175 yards on 22 carries including two for touchdowns.
Buford ran 23 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Brett Shoop completed eight of 11 passes for 116 yards including a 36-yard TD strike to Dillon Johnson.
The Greyhounds have only one conference game remaining. They host Concordia (3-3, 1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday. If they win, they would secure at least a third-place conference finish but would need some help to finish second.
Wellington-Napoleon (4-2, 2-1), who beat Windsor 34-6 in Week 1, stands in the Greyhounds’ way of a second-place finish.
If the Tigers win out, they would hold second place outright.
Wellington’s next challenge will be Sweet Springs on Friday night.
For Sweet Springs, a win would guarantee it at least a share of third place.
Orrick has locked up at least a share of the I-70 title, needing only to beat St. Paul Lutheran (2-4, 0-3) on Friday night to win the title outright.
Concordia has an outside shot at a share of second place. It would need to win its final four games and hope Wellington slips up twice in the final four weeks.
So how will this race shake out in the end?
Orrick, the defending Class 1 state champion, will complete its fourth straight perfect conference season.
Wellington will go 4-0 down the stretch to finish second.
Windsor will take third, and Sweet Springs will finish fourth for the third time in four years.
