The Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers offense sputtered in the championship game of the 2009 Smith-Cotton/
McDonald’s Classic girls basketball tournament on Saturday night.
The Lady Tigers only mustered two points in the second quarter and struggled throughout the contest with their half-court offense as the Glendale Lady Falcons chalked up a 55-21 victory.
“Ya know, we lost today but we played well this weekend,” said S-C coach Chris Parsons. “We are 6-2 since Christmas. I don’t know when the last time they had a chance to win the championship of their own tournament. Even though we wanted the first-place trophy, we will be happy with second place.”
Smith-Cotton was forced to play a zone for the majority of the night because of the size and athleticism of Glendale. The Lady Falcons have three forwards who stand 6 feet tall.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead until Glendale post Kaley Lyons scored eight consecutive points. Glendale took an 18-8 first-quarter lead.
The Lady Tigers offense went cold in the second quarter. Their lone basket came on a jumper by Whitney Pollitt with 2:15 remaining in the half, and Glendale took a 33-10 lead into halftime.
Smith-Cotton trailed 42-18 ending the fourth quarter.
Lyons paced all scorers with 23 points.
In the other trophy games, Camdenton beat KC Northeast 64-30 for third place, KC Center beat Marshall 49-31 for the consolation trophy, and Westport beat Renaissance Academy 44-36 for seventh place.
