Quest for job lands college grad in Sedalia

The Sedalia Democrat

At the start of summer,  my opportunities to be a sportswriter appeared limitless.

I had just graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and was in contact with many publications, jockeying for an opportunity to showcase my passion for sports print journalism.

The Sedalia Democrat was one of the first newspapers to show serious interest. After being flown here for an interview and a check on the lay of the land, I was sold on living in the Midwest.

Originally from Texas, I’ve lived all over. I’ve become accustomed to small-town life. While my homes have changed, loyalty to my favorite teams hasn’t.

I bleed Tarheel blue in college basketball, I “hook ’em horns” every Saturday, and my heart lies with the Houston Astros in the sport I love most.

As with most Big 12 North and Longhorn fans, I can’t stomach the Sooners.

One day, I plan to go on a cross country tour of baseball parks. Wrigley Field would be first on the list, but I can’t in good conscience root for the Cubs. As for the Cardinals, I worry about them every year come playoff time.

I enjoy going to the movies and love the beach, and I look forward to checking out the grandeur of the Ozarks. Most nights you can find me parked in front of the tube, watching reality television and keeping up with baseball scores on my laptop.

I’m as laid back as they come, and at 22 years old, I am excited about the experience and prospects associated with covering Sedalia athletics.

In college, I covered every sport from tennis to basketball, writing in-depth features and establishing contacts with the athletic director and the coaches at the university.

I tailgated every Saturday and went to as many home games as my schedule allowed.

I was devoted to covering local sports in Greenville and I believe Sedalia will provide much of the same; a promising transition based on the area’s rich history and strong support of local athletics.

I come from a college town of 70,000 people. Sedalia is truly a breath of fresh air and a great place to call home after living in the humid South.

The move has been stressful, but with every transition comes a period of settling in. I look forward to getting acclimated with  the town and most importantly, the people of Sedalia.

Through coverage of local sports, I hope to add to the community and pick up where I left off in
