Lady Roadrunners play without middle hitter/blocker

The Sedalia Democrat

The State Fair Community College volleyball team began the season short-handed.

Sophomore middle hitter/blocker Kelsey Allen went down with an ankle injury early last week and is out indefinitely.

So coach Diane Shipley was forced to put a player in the middle who had no experience there in this weekend’s Mineral Area College tournament in Park Hills.

Freshman Julie Ohlms stepped into the 6-foot-1 Allen’s role and performed admirably, according to Shipley.

“We’ve been working her at setter and some on the right side,” Shipley said of the 5-10 St. Louis-area resident. “She’s never played in the middle before” and she has no experience at setter either.

The Lady Roadrunners went 1-3 in the two-day tournament.

They began play Friday with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 win over Bevill State, of Fayette, Ala..

Morgyn Bergschneider had 17 assists, seven digs and five kills for State Fair. Nicole Hopp had six kills and three blocks.

Antonia Jones had 14 kills, seven digs, three blocks and three service aces. Ashlie Mayfield had 10 kills for the Lady Roadrunners who will host Jefferson at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in their Region 16 opener.

Mineral Area beat the Lady Roadrunners 25-14, 12-25, 25-17, 25-18 late Friday night.

Bergschneider had 14 assists. Alyssa Blinzler had 14 digs.

Hopp had four blocks. Jones had 14 digs and 12 kills.

Mayfield had 12 kills, seven digs and one block. Ohlms had two service aces.

On Saturday, Northwest Shoals swept the Lady Roadrunners 25-20, 25-23, 25-16.

Mindy Griffith had eight digs. Jones had 10 kills, five digs and four blocks.

Mayfield added eight kills, three blocks and two service aces. Ohlms had four blocks.

Staci Waibel had 13 assists.

Lindenwood beat the State Fair girls 27-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22.

Bergschneider had 16 assists, eight kills and six blocks. Griffith had 19 digs and two service aces.

Hopp had 10 blocks and eight kills. Jones had 18 digs, 12 kills and three blocks.

Mayfield had 11 kills, six digs and two service aces. Waibel had 16 assists.

Shipley believes her team has the talent to compete against anyone.

"We had great stats,” Shipley said. “... We just made some silly errors. Once we get rid of the silly errors, we’ll do fine.”
